A Murder Mystery Puzzle Contest

Tuesday, October 21, 2008

Okay, if you're not from Ragnaboards, you can just ignore this post. If you happen to have taken Discrete Mathematics sometime in college, don't be an asshole. Let other people figure it out, unless you want the prize badly.

(continued)

The mechanics for the contest are simple. Below is a set of clues about a murder that involves the occupants of five consecutive houses. Using these clues, it is possible for you to deduce who was murdered and who is the murderer. If you think you know the answer, you can leave a post with your RB username, the answer to the puzzle, and a brief description on your methodology. First person with the correct answer and a reasonable description wins.

Prize for this is 50,000 jellopies in Ragnaboards. The contest is open until November 15.

Note that this is not a conventional murder mystery. I'm not interested in answers like "It's the guy who hates dogs because the poodle went missing blah blah blah". There is a very logical way to solve this problem and I want to see it answered without introducing speculative information. Here's a hint: All the information you will ever need is already in the clues.

That said, here are the clues:

1. - The Progammer plays bowling on Saturday.
2. - When facing the houses, the house with the blue roof is immediately to the right of the house with the grey roof.
3. - The man in the middle house plays golf twice a week.
4. - The woman in the house with the blue roof is a hockey player.
5. - The Biologist lives in the first house, near the cheesecake shop.
6. - The person who drives a Toyota lives next to the man with the Dalmatian.
7. - The person who lives in the house with the red roof drives a Honda
8. - The Biologist lives in the house next to the house with the green roof.
9. - The Architect's house has a Mazda parked in the driveway.
10. - The man who drives the Benz owns a Shitzhu.
11. - The Senator lives in the house with the brown roof.
12. - The house with the Honda in the driveway is next to the house next door to where the Doberman lives.
13. - The murderer's Poodle went missing on Sunday.
14. - The Judge hates dogs but loves cheesecake.
15. - The man who drives the BMW is a keen jogger and was seen running past the victim's house just after midnight on Wednesday.
16. - The victim used to enjoy playing lacrosse on Tuesday evenings.

Last hint: Draw five houses.

Good luck.

My Answer:
I think that the murderer is the Biologist and the woman in the house w/ blue roof or the Hockey Player is the victim/murdered.

Reasonable Description:
The Hockey Player is the victim because it said in the clue that the victim used to enjoy playing lacrosse on Tuesday evenings. I think that the murderer is the Biologist because it is very possible that he has a poodle. And besides, the judge love cheesecakes and hates dogs, he make the poodle vanish so that is easy for him to please the judge, and he is the person who is closest to the cheesecake shop. He can buy him a cheesecake anytime if he wants to.

alright, i used MS Excel and placed all the clues on a table and did the savior of all of us who take engineering board exams - the trial and error method.

using all the clues, i paired up the houses with the people living there as well as their dogs and cars. here's the list:

first house: grey roof, biologist lives there with his shitzu and the benz.

second house: blue roof, the woman lives there with her dobberman. i speculated a bit here that she's also the architect, so the mazda is hers.

third house: green roof, the judge lives here alone without a dog, accompanied only by his toyota, which he may be using to go to the golf club twice a week.

fourth house: with the red roof and honda, this is where the programmer resides along with the dalmatian. he may or may not be bringing the dog to the bowling lanes, though.

fifth house: the brown roof where the senator lives in. he has his bmw parked here, but i guess he doesn't use it while jogging. also, he seemed to have lost his poodle recently.

assuming that my deductions are correct, it is the senator who killed the lacrosse enthusiast (i suppose it's the hockey player, since both sports use sticks). i dunno what the motive is, though.

i will be thinking of other possible answers, i've got to go now. =)

oh yeah, my RB username is "Jerri" but i think you know that already, right, Redkinoko?

Methodology: Logic and a little bit of trial and error hahaha... I assumed that each person corresponded to 1 car, 1 dog and 1 hobby except the judge which I assumed didn't have a dog being a dog-hater...

Answer:

1st House: Red Roof, Biologist, Doberman, Honda, Lacrosse - VICTIM

2nd House: Green Roof, Programmer, Shitzhu, Benz, Bowling

3rd House: Grey Roof, Architect, Dalmatian, Mazda, Golf

4th House: Blue Roof, Judge, Toyota, Hockey

5th House: Brown Roof, Senator, Poodle, BMW, Jogging - MURDERER

lol that was hard...

as the trend goes:
each roof color contains a person with: a profession, a car, a dog breed and a sport(hobby)

through deduction i got this:

1stHouse: red roof, biologist, honda, dalmation, lacrosse.
(making the biologist the victim)

2ndHouse: green roof, programmer, toyota, doberman, bowling.

3rdHouse: brown roof, senator, benz
shihtzu, golf
(related golf to government officials esp in the US)

4thHouse: grey roof, judge, bmw, no dog, keen jogger
(loves cheese cake so he goes by the biologist's(victim) house everytime he goes to the cheesecake shop)

5thHouse: blue roof, architect, mazda, poodle, hockey
(the murderer)

My analysis:
1st house - The Biologist who lives in the red house and owns a Honda and a poodle. Lives near the Cheesecake shop and the MURDERER.

2nd house - The Programmer who lives in the Green House and owns a Benz and a Shitzu. Bowling every Saturday. (No reason to kill)

Middle House - The Architect who lives in the grey house and owns a Mazda and a Doberman. Golfs twice a week (No reason to kill)

4th House - A woman who is a hockey player and lives in the blue house. Owns a BMW and a Dalmatian. A keen jogger who ran passed the victim's house after midnight on Wednesday.

Last House - The Senator/Judge who lives in the Brown House. Owns a Toyota, hates Dogs but loves Cheesecake and used to play Lacrosse Every Tuesday Evening. He was the VICTIM...

The Murderer's Motive:
When the Biologist Noticed his poodle was missing at Sunday he suspected the Senator to be the culprit because the guy loves cheesecake and hates dogs. The Senator planned this to make the Biologist move out of the house and move in next to the cheesecake shop. Tuesday Evening when the Biologist killed the senator for revenge for his missing poodle and After midnight on Wednesday the Hockey player who passed that house while jogging

Just because I wanted to answer it! 8DDDD

House 1:
Red
Biologist
Lacross
Dalmation
Honda
(The Victim)

Reasoning:
Clue# 5 for biologist's location
Combine Clue#'s 2, 8, 11 for biologist's roof
Clue# 7 for the car once roof is solved
Combine Clue#'s 1, 3, 4 and 15 for hobby
Clue# 16 to establish victim-hood
Combine Clue#'s 10, 12 and 13 for pet dog

House 2:
Green
Programmer
Bowling
Doberman
Toyota

Reasoning:
Clue# 8 for roof color
Clue# 12 for pet
Clue# 6 for car
Clue# 15 for hobby and subsequently job

House 3:
Brown
Senator
Golf
Shitzu
Benz

Reasoning:
Clue# 3 for hobby
Combine Clue#'s 10, 14, and 15 to get the car and the pet (At this point I was left with Mazda and Benz for the cars. Going with Mazda would conflict with Clue# 4's "Woman" hint for the last 2 columns)
Subsequently use Clue# 9 and 14 to get the job and the roof color

House 4:
Gray
Judge
Jogging
None
BMW

Reasoning:
By elimination, gray and blue are left in column 4.
Use Clue# 2 to determine the roof
Use Clue# 4 to determine the hobby
Combine Clue#'s 4, and 15 to determine the car
Use Clue# 9 to determine job
Use Clue# 14 to determine pet

House 5:
Blue
Architect
Hockey
Poodle
Mazda
(The Murderer)

Reasoning: You are now left with the only options remaining.
Use Clue# 13 to establish murderer-status

RB Name: EBS.

Answer:
Red > Green > Brown > Grey > Blue

Red:Biologist/Honda Driver/Doberman Owner
Brown:Senator/Plays golf twice/BMW Driver/Poodle Owner
Blue:Judge/Woman Hockey Player/Playing lacrosse every Tuesday/Toyota Driver

Murderer:The Senator
Victim: The Judge/Woman Hockey Player

How:

2. When facing the houses, the house with the blue roof is immediately to the right of the house with the Grey roof.
Grey > Blue

3. The man in the middle house plays golf twice a week.
Middle House = Man who plays golf

4. The woman in the house with the blue roof is a hockey player.
Blue Roof = Woman Hockey Player

5. The Biologist lives in the first house, near the cheesecake shop.
Cheesecake Shop > 1st House/Bio's House > 2nd House > Man who plays golf's House > 4th House > 5th House

6. The person who drives a Toyota lives next to the man with the Dalmatian.
The Woman is the driver of the Toyota and the dalmatian is in the Grey roof

8. The Biologist lives in the house next to the house with the green roof.
Shop > Bio's House > Green Roof

11. The Senator lives in the house with the brown roof.
Shop > Bio's House > Green Roof > Senator's House/Brown Roof > Grey Roof > Blue Roof

12. The house with the Honda in the driveway is next to the house next door to where the Doberman lives.
It is the same house and it is the house of the Biologist

14. The Judge hates dogs but loves cheesecake.
The one left to be the judge is the Woman hockey player because others have their own profession. And the judge hates dogs and loves cheesecakes but that doesn't mean she must be close to the cheesecake shop

16. The victim used to enjoy playing lacrosse on Tuesday evenings.
Lacrosse is like hockey

13. The murderer's Poodle went missing on Sunday.
The Senator is the only one left that has no dog right now and the Judge don't like dogs

15. The man who drives the BMW is a keen jogger and was seen running past the victim's house just after midnight on Wednesday.
Everyone has their own car right now except the Senator

Motive:
Maybe they are playing lacrosse at Tuesday evening and the senator accidentally killed the Woman

Answer:
-Victim: Biologist
-Murderer: Hockey Player's Poodle

Description:
Order of the houses> Cake Shop>Red>Green>Brown>Grey>Blue

Cake Shop> Judge jogger BMW
Red> Biologist Honda
Green> Architect Doberman Mazda
Brown> Senator Golf2x/week Benz Shitzu
Grey> Programmer Dalmatian
Blue> Female Hockey player Poodle Toyota

The judge is the keen jogger because of the fact that he hates dogs because these dogs were chasing him. He owns the Cakeshop because he loves cheesecake. He passed by the victim's house because he came passing by the house of the female hockey player where her poodle was on the loose. He came running for help and the biologist who just came home from playing lacrosse saw the judge running from the poodle and helped him. Running after the judge, the biologist tried to prevent the poodle from harming the judge and in turn he was the one who was bitten by the poodle. The victim was lucky he got just got bitten by the poodle but he did not know that the poodle had rabies. Since there was no veterinarian the biologist died and the poodle also because dogs with rabies who bit people also dies because of it. That is why the poodle went missing on sunday because the poodle already died that sunday.
